The Solution: Octopus-Edge

Our client specializes in the industries of fencing, mattresses, and multi-use precision cutting components.
Needs
Our client was looking to automate the production of performance indicators linked to machine productivity, but also to automate the data collection to determine the causes of machine stoppages. Secondly, we needed to display production line and performance information on a web-based platform accessible to production supervisors and managers, as well as real-time information on equipment status, production rates and production output per shift. We also had to automate the production of OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) analysis reports. The data collected through these systems is still used today to support the activities of personnel responsible for continuous improvement.
Solutions
To meet the client’s objectives, we installed electrical components to directly connect the production equipment to be monitored. Our team then determined which means, sensors and communication modules could be used to make the equipment “talk”.
A tool from the Octopus solution, the Octopus-Edge module, was then installed and took charge of consolidating and distributing the collected data.
Once the equipment was connected via Octopus-Edge in the plant, we deployed the
Octopus cloud solution, which is able to capture the data sent by Octopus-Edge.
Training was provided to users, who were then able to use the solution to implement their continuous improvement strategy.

Combined downtime
on three major pieces of equipment reduced from 225 hours to 150 hours, right from the start, three months after implementation

with the same fleet of equipment, of over 200,000 linear feet of product in a given month

now carried out continuously, enabled productivity gains to be maintained and even improved over time
